Awning sizes

Caravans with different body lengths naturally require correspondingly different awning sizes. The size is based on the circumferential dimension of the caravan. Any awning size always covers a defined circumference range. For example, the Brand awning size 12 covers caravans with a circumferential dimension of 918-938 cm, i.e. 20 cm. The smaller this range is selected by the awning manufacturer, the better will be the fit of the awning.

Permanent ventilation

Just like a room, an awning must also be ventilated. Permanent ventilation in the gable ensures continual air circulation. High winds and cold however can cause drafts. This can be prevented by closable ventilation flaps, although these must be opened when leaving the awning (this is unfortunately often forgotten).

Multi-part awning

It is generally advisable to choose an awning consisting of several parts. In addition to the possible usage advantages, such awnings can be assembled more easily and in stages. First fit the roof into the channelling of the caravan, then connect the side sections and front wall elements to the roof by zip-fastener. Many awning sections also have the advantage that they can be stowed individually in the towing vehicle or in the caravan itself. Most Brand awnings consist of at least 5 sections (roof, 2 side wall and 2 front wall elements).

Awning depth

Our awnings have a depth at ground level of 240 cm, 280 cm, 300 cm or 350 cm. Many requirements must be considered in the choice of the awning depth. How many people will be suing the awning, will children need a covered area to play in, will bicycles be parked here? How large is the pitch? Remember: the awning is an important living and leisure area.

Roof shape

Most Brand awnings have a canopy. These are approx. 30 cm deep and therefore offer good protection against the weather. Canopy reinforcement, which we supply as standard with some models, improves the fit and the stability. The side roof projection which some models have also offers weather protection for the side walls, but of course also means increased weight, longer assembly time and a larger area exposed to the wind.

Position of the entrance door

An important but often overlooked consideration is the position of the entrance door. For example, if the caravan entrance door is to the rear of the axle, the canopy door should be positioned at the extreme left, or at least to the left of centre, to ensure optimum use of the space in the awning. In this case, the Brand element technology provides you with various layout possibilities, from the simple replaceable wall with two possible door positions to the element technology with up to six possible door positions. Roll-up entrance doors are easier to handle. However, dirt collecting on the ground strip can also be rolled up with the door, possibly impairing the function of the zip-fasteners. In the case of a door with an arch zip-fastener, you can create a ventilation hatch (stable door effect).

Weight

The touring camper increasingly has to be aware of the overall weight, since the caravan load capacity also has to take other accessories and equipment into account. Light, high-quality fabrics coated on one side only are an important factor in reducing the overall weight. PVC fabrics are significantly heavier, but offer higher strength and resilience. Steel frames are very strong, but also heavy. Aluminium is lighter, and therefore more suitable for touring camping.

Window covers

Window covers are a must for both the seasonal and the permanent camper. The window films which are used today are a high-quality product, but still not glass. Window flaps protect the film against the effects of weather and unwanted view into the interior during your absence. The window flaps should be attached to the awning by zip-fasteners at the side.

Zip-fastener coverings

Covered zip-fasteners provide protection against adverse weather and weathering effects, although it takes longer, so that moisture and condensation between the zip-fastener and cover can dry out.

Ground attachment

The anchoring and tensioning of an awning is the primary requirement optimum stability in adverse weather, and the correct fit and durability of an awning. All Brand awnings are fitted with the multi-function strip (a Brand idea), with which the awning can be anchored at a spacing of 2.5 cm. Anchoring with a very close spacing is therefore possible if required. Obstructions in the ground such as stones or roots can be circumvented. This anchoring system also offers the perfect requirements for attaching the awning to a wooden floor. A further advantage is the 3-way ground sealing provided with most Brand awnings: wide internal ground strip – central multi-function strip – external ground strip. An awning must always be properly anchored in the area of vertical seams.

Awning frame

Our awnings are supplied as standard with a 25 mm or 28 mm steel frame or a 28 mm aluminium frame. A 32 mm can be supplied as an optional extra, although this means extra weight and volume, or aluminium frames of 28 mm and 32 mm diameter. These are more suitable for the touring camper due to the weight reduction. The wall thickness is also important, and should be at least 1 mm.
